Since my flagship year in 2017, I worked at the OAS at the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, the National Democratic Institute, the UN Information Center, the National LGBT chamber of commerce, and Freedom House in DC. Since July 2023, I’ve worked at the carter center in Atlanta. In 2022 I served as an electoral observer for the elections in Brazil. I have used Portuguese in all of these positions.

- Alejandro Espinosa – 2017

I began working for DLNSEO as a contractor with the NSEP Service Team, primarily working with Boren Scholars and Fellows in Feb 2023. In December 2024, I became a federal employee with DLNSEO/the NSEP team, still working with Boren students although I interact with DLNSEO at-large more often now. I wouldn’t be working for DLNSEO if it wasn’t for Flagship and all of the opportunities the program has awarded me over the years (assistance getting the Boren, internship experience, knowledge of study abroad programs/federal initiatives to increase access to foreign language training, etc.).

- Rachel Jovert – 2021

“Since graduation I’ve worked as a DoD contractor for the National Security Education Program and have since transitioned to an outreach and recruitment position at IIE for the Boren Awards. Without Flagship, I wouldn’t have known about Boren, I wouldn’t have gone to Brazil, and I wouldn’t have achieved what I have thus far professionally.”

- Baleigh Preston – 2021

Since my graduation, my professional trajectory has taken a decidedly international and enriching turn, much of which I owe to the Flagship program. Learning about Brazilian culture and mastering the Portuguese language opened up a world of global opportunities for me. I founded a logistics company in the United States, an endeavor that grew exponentially due to my dedication and knowledge of the industry. This effort did not go unnoticed, and as a result, I was selected to be part of the International Transportation Industry Chamber, headquartered in Brasilia, Brazil. This prestigious organization brings together 520 members from 61 countries, all committed to the development of transport and logistics worldwide.

- Natalia Sanchez – 2016

Since graduating in December 2022, I began my master’s program at the University of Georgia in Journalism with a concentration in public relations. I received a fully funded graduate assistantship position due to my proficiency in Portuguese and Spanish to work on research projects with a Brazilian public relations firm partnered with UGA. My internship experience at Edelman in São Paulo also was instrumental in receiving this assistantship and I believe strengthened my graduate school application.  The Flagship program solidified my interest in international communication and provided me with an immersive professional experience. The opportunity to intern at one of the most recognized public relations firms in the world while in Brazil was a life changing experience. Additionally, the capstone project further sparked my interest in pursuing a graduate level degree.

- Sara Castro – 2022

While I worked at GLG, an expert networking firm based in Austin, on the Latin American team! I used Portuguese every day to connect our clients with experts in Brazil and Latin America at large. I learned Portuguese entirely because of the Flagship Program, so it’s no exaggeration to say that the PFP is the reason I had that job .

- Tom Russel – 2021

I’m currently an Audience Strategy Manager at The Home Depot and while I am no longer using Portuguese on a day to day basis, Flagship has impacted my professional life positively. Being able to do an internship in Brazil all in Portuguese gave the me confidence and soft skills to tackle any professional task!

- Patricia Nabor – 2015

After college, I was able to get an internship with the US Forest Service. After completing the internship, I was offered a full-time position with the Forest service as a wildlife technician. Flagship did prepare me to network in the professional world by hosting events and even in Brazil to find students and professors that could further our understanding of how to navigate living in Brazil.

- Amy Gallardo – 2016

Since graduation, I have worked on political campaigns and at an environmental nonprofit. I developed a passion for clean energy, and am currently attending Georgia Tech (I know!) for a Master’s degree in Public Policy. Flagship encouraged me to try new things, and my meandering career path is a result of the fearless attitude for change that the Flagship program taught me.

“Currently at the University of Georgia I am studying Portuguese, International Affairs, and Music. Oddly enough I was introduced to the Portuguese language by listening to my bass professor, Dr. Milton Masciadri, take calls and interact with exchange students who played bass and were Brazilian. I was always in awe that my bass professor knew over 4 languages. He always told me it was a great opportunity speaking to someone in their native language because you would be able to hear them express themselves truly and with ease. In a bass lesson one day Dr. Masciadri stopped to tell me about the Flagship program and he thought it would be a great opportunity. I applied and soon I was in Vermont in an emersion program speaking, writing, and relating with my colleagues in Portuguese. I plan to use my language skills in Portuguese to help me achieve my goal in knowing multiple languages and also to teach English in Brazil after I graduate. I am grateful for the support of all my teachers and directors for allowing me to be a part of this amazing program and I aspire to reach a level of proficiency that leaves me at ease reading, writing, and relating with all Portuguese speakers in the future.”

“Oi gente tudo bem? I never really had any connection to Brazil before attending UGA, but it had always seemed like a fascinating country to me, which is why I enrolled in PORT 1001 my freshman year. That proved to be one of the best decisions I ever made, as it opened up an incredible number of doors and opportunities, including the Portuguese Flagship Program. As a Romance Languages/Biology double major who loves to travel, the PFP is the perfect program for me because it allows me to take both biology and Portuguese classes at the same time while studying abroad – something no other exchange program would have allowed me to do. What’s more, this program will be an invaluable asset to my upcoming medical school applications because it will set me apart from the sea of other applicants. After completing med school, it is my ultimate goal to use my language skills to help treat underserved populations both domestically and abroad. A recent study conducted by the Pew Hispanic Research Center found that “language barrier” is one of the top reasons that Latinos (both Hispanic and Brazilian) don’t seek medical care. One day, I hope to use my language skills acquired during the PFP to help reverse this trend and provide the Latino community with the treatment they need.”

“Oi meu nome e Omar Pacheco! As a student on track to major in International Business, the Portuguese Flagship Program is a great opportunity to experience not only the culture of a different country as great as Brazil but also gain a great work experience in a country with great economic growth. I’ve known how to speak Spanish since I was little thanks to my parents and started learning French in high school so I’ve always had a history with language and wanted to keep expanding my knowledge of languages. I always found Portuguese to be a beautiful language so when I heard about the program there was no question as to which language I wanted to learn next.”

“I have always loved learning about other cultures, especially through the lens of another language. I first began studying Portuguese my freshman year to further pursue my love of languages as well as to study Brazil, an intersection between my International Affairs and Romance Languages majors. I was drawn to the Flagship Program because of the dual way I could apply everything I have learned at UGA: academic and professional experience. Not only will I be able to gain a deeper fluency in Brazilian Portuguese, I will also gain international professional experience. I hope to use my intercultural Flagship experience in a career where I will be able to help resolve global issues and conflicts.”

“My decision to pursue the flagship portuguese program ties in directly with my interests in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. I am fascinated by the growing economy of Brazil and the relation the United States has in that regard. I have spent a few months in Brazil previously and have fallen in love with the nature of Brazil, Brazilian people and faith, the portuguese language in speech and music, and the variance in language depending on the social sphere. I lived in Paraguay for a year-long internship program and find Latin America to be familiar and warm. I am ecstatic to take this wonderful opportunity in order to learn more about such an influential and charismatic nation.”

“Oi pessoal! My interest in Portuguese arose during my sophomore year in college. I am a Romance Languages major, and had been studying Spanish and Italian prior to Portuguese. One day I went with my roommate to one of her Portuguese classes. It was a “bring a friend day” so that others could be more acquainted with Portuguese. The only prior knowledge of Portuguese that I had was that it was “like Spanish.” However, little did I know how different it was. I instantly became a fan. To me, it seemed as though the mere act of speaking Brazilian Portuguese was fun. The melodic sounds of the language really captured my attention. It proved difficult at first, however I am very happy with my progress I have made with Portuguese. I am obsessed with languages, and being able to speak with others in their mother tongue. Whatever language it may be, knowing a few words or phrases instantly creates a stronger connection with a non-native English speaker. Brazil has such a rich, defined culture from everywhere else in the world. Regional dialects really fascinate me, so I am very much looking forward to learn more about the ways in which Brazilians speak, depending on their region. Also, how Brazil is proving to become a very prominent world power, being able to hone my skills of the language will only help me in my professional aspirations. I want to work as an interpreter one day, and the demand for Portuguese speakers in the professional field is only growing. I am ready to open up and take in everything that Brazil has to offer me in 2014!”

“Before studying Portuguese, I had already decided I wanted to work in Latin America business because of the prospects for exciting growth over the course of my career. When I found out about Portuguese Flagship, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to learn Portuguese, see Brazil, and prepare myself to work in Latin America’s largest country.
The most obvious benefit of being a flagship student is being able to participant in the capstone year abroad in Brazil with financial support from the program. This year abroad involves studying in a Brazilian university and working in a professional internship all with the aim of achieving superior proficiency in Portuguese. In addition to this experience, being a flagship student allows you to be part of a group of open minded, driven people who recognize the importance of learning other languages. I hope to use my Portuguese to work in business in Brazil. The energy industry (because of oil discoveries and biofuel technology) the banking industry, and the consumer sector are all huge areas of growth and Brazilian and multinational companies alike are looking for qualified candidates who, of course, know Portuguese. I hope to be a part of this exciting economic and social development by working in banking or financial consulting in Brazil.”

“Oi pessoal! I’m Emily Escoe, and I am a Senior, Public Relations major and Portuguese minor. When I arrived at UGA, I knew I wanted to learn another language; however, I had no idea which one. I started taking Portuguese courses my first semester to fulfill my foreign language requirement, loved the classes, and continued taking one each semester, eventually deciding I absolutely had to visit the country of Carnaval, Bossa Nova and Cristo Redentor. When I found out about the Portuguese Flagship Program, I knew it would be a great opportunity to learn about Brazilian culture, business practices and the Portuguese language. The program was especially appealing to me because of its focus on immersion in both a university and business atmosphere. As a Flagship student, I admit that I am humbled on a daily basis as there are still words I don’t know and simple activities I have to ask for help with. However, I am learning about another country on a level that I could never do through a traditional study abroad program, becoming fluent in another language, gaining work experience in my area of choice, trying new foods I’ve never heard of, seeing breathtaking landscapes, meeting some of the nicest and most welcoming people I’ve ever met in my life and growing tremendously as person, making every bit of the frustrations and hard work worth the experience in the end. Following graduation, I hope to use Portuguese in collaboration with my Public Relations degree, working in government relations or the business sector serving as a liaison between the United States and Brazil.”

“Oi gente! I am currently a senior Biology and Romance Languages double major. My personal relationship with Portuguese began when I was young, listening to the Brazilian Bossa Nova records my father had collected in our house. Because Portuguese was not offered in my high school, once I started college, one of the first things I did was enroll in Portuguese classes. I loved the courses, but I found it difficult to balance my language classes, my science classes, and my desire to study abroad; that is until I discovered The Portuguese Flagship Program. Finally, a funded opportunity presented itself to be able to continue my science classes, but to also have a full year of cultural and linguistic immersion in Brazil. That is the benefit of being a Flagship student, you are provided support, but you are independent, and therefore you are able to understand Brazil unlike any other program I have seen at UGA. I am also thinking about internship opportunities for the second half of the program; an internship that I plan on helping me on my upcoming medical school applications. My ultimate dream is returning to the continent of my birth and doing medical missions in Angola or Mozambique, and although I do not know for sure if and when this dream will be accomplished, at least I can say that The Portuguese Flagship Program laid the foundation for that dream to pursued.”

“I became interested in Portuguese after seeing various Brazilian films. I found the language beautiful. I chose to attend UGA in part because I knew I would be able to study Portuguese here, and I began my study of the language during my freshman year. The benefits of being a Flagship student are myriad. The Portuguese Flagship Program is different from almost all other study abroad programs because you are required to already have a solid base in Portuguese, which I can say prepares you greatly for your time in Brazil. The required Capstone year also makes Flagship an extremely valuable experience. At first I was intimidated by the idea of spending a year abroad, but now I can’t imagine spending only a semester here. It simply would not be enough time to be immersed in Brazil and to enjoy and learn all there is to be had. I intend to use Portuguese in my future career, whether it be in the field of foreign language education, sociology, or working for a global company.”

“I became interested in Portuguese because it was something new yet at the same time vaguely familiar. As a Spanish major, I have always been interested in the Romance Languages, but when I had the chance to visit Brazil two years ago, I got to experience first-hand how unique and beautiful the country, the people and the language are. Later, I learned that given Brazil’s recent successes in the global marketplace, it is actually a very economically sound decision to take up Portuguese. As a Flagship student, having the support of the Portuguese department helps immensely. The fact that the Flagship is a prestigious and competitive program with support from the United States government only adds to the value equation. After graduation, I plan to use my knowledge of Portuguese and Spanish to work in international business in Latin America in the Human Resources field.”

Being a Flagship student provides access to small group Portuguese tutorials and unique cultural events as well as financial aid to pursue language proficiency abroad in Brazil over an extended period of time. I plan to use my Portuguese language abilities along with my degree in international affairs to either work as a Foreign Service Officer or to work for a multinational corporation abroad.”

In the future, I plan to use my knowledge of Portuguese to work as a government linguist, specifically as a translator or interpreter. “I’ve wanted to learn Portuguese for as long as I can remember. Not only was I attracted to the language for all of the regular reasons – its beauty and the beauty of its country, and its value in the business and governmental realms, but also for more personal reasons. My grandmother was born and raised in Brazil, but never passed the language on to my mother, and thus on to me. Until coming to UGA, learning the language in depth seemed like something of an impossibility, and visiting Brazil out of the question. But the Portuguese department at UGA, and the Portuguese Flagship Program through LACSI, have allowed me to realize both of those seemingly unattainable dreams. The benefits of the Flagship are many, but chief among them is the fact that I am able to be more fully immersed in the language, and for a longer time, than I would be with almost any other program. The skills acquired this year will differentiate me from the competition in both my future academic and professional careers.”

However, I unfortunately never learned the language as a child. Learning Portuguese at UGA has been remarkable for me because I can finally speak to my family. Yet the benefits do not end there, Portuguese has given me opportunities like the Flagship, but more importantly, Portuguese enables me to stand out against the sea of other qualified students to give a better chance in the professional world. In the future, I hope to either continue my studies or start a career in Brazil.”
